Potential

Note: I am writing about this for two reasons: therapy and to hopefully generate some laughs at our expense. I still do not think it's funny. I keep holding on to the fact that one day it might be.

Yesterday had the potential to be a great.

Potential...

Preface: We are in the middle of giving our kitchen an affordable face lift. Refinishing our cabinets through Jason's work. Hardware (cabinet jewelry), new (laminate) counter tops mostly because I burnt a whole in our current counter top, and hopefully one day a subway tile back splash.

Every now and then, I jump on KSL to see if there are any used appliances for a good deal. On Wednesday I saw a black range and dishwasher set for sale for $200. We decided to go take a look at them. We liked them. We bought them. For $175.

Jump to the potentially good Thursday.

I was leaving work early (always nice) to have my hair done. But not just any normal hair appointment. My BFF (I'm not ashamed to use that abbreviation at any applicable time) from High School, Joni, has moved back to North Ogden during the week to do hair. So it was a hair appointment and a reunion. Double wammy! Plus I love the way she does my hair more than anyone has ever done my hair before! Triple wammy!

Potential.

We decided, since we bought some new appliances, that we should throw our old old appliances on KSL for one day and see if anyone would pick them up from us. I didn't even put a price and just told anyone interested to make an offer.

Well around 10am I got a call from a lady who was very interested in our old old appliances. She was going to pick them up that night (so they would be out of our way for the newbies) and guess what her offer was for the both of them...$175.

Potential.

For a split second I felt guilty taking $175 from her because that's what we paid for newer ones, but that's what she offered so she must have been okay with it.

At this point, I am ecstatic! We just upgraded our appliances by at least 10 years... and for free! I'm calling everyone... my dad, my mom, Jason's mom.

Jason and I talk about how awesome the situation is the whole way to get our newbies. We arrive at the couples house, throw the appliances in the back of the truck. I ask Jason if he thought they would be okay like that. Like that meaning: not tied down at all. I made a special trip up to my dad's just to get some tie downs for the appliances. But since the guy who picked up our old appliances didn't use any tie downs, Jason thought they would be fine.

We then decide to go to dinner to celebrate. Jason has been telling me about this Chinese place in Layton that is fabulous so we head that way. I asked him if he thought we would be okay to go on the freeway with the appliances in the back.

He said yes. Naturally, I trusted him.

Potential.

And this is when all the potential went down the toilet.

Maybe 10 seconds after getting on the freeway, we hear a noise.

We look back to see the range tipped over towards the tailgate.

I freaked out in my own little way, which doesn't consist of yelling. I just held my breath until we pulled off the freeway and into the nearest parking lot.

Neither one of us was expecting what we were about to find.

Jason jumps out first, and as I'm jumping out (literally out of his brother's jacked up truck) I hear Jason yell some profanities that I don't consider bad in my books, but I won't name them for the sake of his reputation with his family that doesn't swear beyond the words rats or sometimes drats.

I keep walking towards the back of the truck to find the entire front panel of the oven busted into thousands of glass shards. The oven door was bent pretty badly and the drawer underneath was too.

Just when we think we are getting lucky we do something stupid like this and get an instant reality check.

We went to the Chinese place, it wasn't as appetizing as I think it may have been under different circumstances.

Then I made him take me to Home Depot. I just wanted to see what the cheapest new black range would cost. It was a lot more than we wanted to spend on appliances but at that point I didn't care. I didn't want to spend the next day looking on KSL, trying to call people about ranges, traveling somewhere to go pick it up again and in the meantime be range-less. So we bought a brand new one.

Usually I love new things. This one hasn't been able to console me yet. Mostly I think because it could have been totally free if we had just used our brains. Maybe when it arrives on Wednesday (yes- we are range-less until then- well actually we have a busted one where the new one will be because we had no where else to put it) I will be excited.

Maybe one day when $400 isn't a lot of money for us- this will be funny.

Needless to say I had a DP last night.

And I'm having another one for breakfast this morning.

Along with a Reese's Easter Egg.

At least my hair looks good.

The subway tile back splash is probably going to have to wait.

And possibly the counter tops too.

Yep, still not funny.
